Why this smoothie works

  • Pineapple brings tropical flavor and vitamin C.
  • Spinach and cucumber add volume, water and nutrients with very few calories.
  • Chia seeds add fiber and plant-based omega-3 fats and thicken the smoothie slightly.
  • Coconut water makes it hydrating and subtly sweet.

It is lighter than a yogurt-based smoothie, which makes it a great afternoon refresher or post-walk drink. For breakfast, add protein (see FAQ).

Tips

  • Frozen pineapple gives a frosty, slushy texture without ice.
  • Blend greens first so there are no leafy bits.
  • Too tart? Add the other half of the banana.

Nutrition at a glance

Approximate values for one large glass:

  • Calories: about 210 kcal
  • Fiber: about 8 g from chia, pineapple and spinach
  • Protein: about 5 g (add Greek yogurt or protein powder for more)
  • Hydration: coconut water and cucumber make this one of the most refreshing smoothies you can blend

Why chia seeds belong in your smoothie

Chia seeds absorb liquid and form a gel, which makes the smoothie thicker and helps it feel more filling. Two tablespoons provide around 10 g of fiber and plant-based omega-3 fats. They have almost no taste, so they fit into nearly any drink.

Tip: if you prefer a completely smooth texture, soak the chia in the coconut water for 5 minutes before blending.

Fresh vs. frozen pineapple

Frozen pineapple chunks give you a thick, icy smoothie and are easy to keep on hand. Fresh pineapple is juicier and a little sweeter, so add a few ice cubes when you use it. Canned pineapple works in a pinch, but choose pineapple packed in juice rather than syrup and drain it well.

Make it a complete breakfast

On its own, this smoothie is a light, hydrating snack. To turn it into a meal:

  • Add 1/2 cup Greek yogurt or 1 scoop vanilla protein powder for protein.
  • Add 1 tablespoon almond butter or 1/4 avocado for healthy fats.
  • Pair it with a boiled egg or a slice of whole-grain toast.

Tropical variations

  • Pina colada style: use light coconut milk and a few drops of vanilla.
  • Mango pineapple: swap the spinach for frozen mango.
  • Green tropical: add a few mint leaves and a squeeze of lime.
  • Golden: add a pinch of turmeric and black pepper.

FAQ

Smoothie Questions

Why add cucumber to a smoothie?

Cucumber adds volume and hydration with very few calories, and it makes the smoothie taste extra fresh.

Can I prep this smoothie ahead?

Portion all ingredients except the coconut water into freezer bags. In the morning, add coconut water and blend.

How do I add protein?

Blend in Greek yogurt, a scoop of vanilla protein powder or a tablespoon of hemp seeds.

Does pineapple help with bloating?

Pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme that helps break down protein, and it is rich in water. Many people find it refreshing after meals, but research on bromelain from food and bloating is limited.

Can I put chia seeds in a smoothie without soaking them?

Yes. Blending them directly works well. Soaking first for 5 to 10 minutes gives a smoother texture and makes the smoothie thicker.
